WHAT IS MRWS ?

The Mentally Retarded Welfare Society (MRWS) is an initiative aimed to provide assistance to the poor and needed people inside our parish and beyond, being children our main target. We work in education, through the schools we run and attending our own orphanage, but we believe that it is also very important the development of the communities where children and people live. Then, our way here, is helping in the creation of little business, housing, promoting health campaigns, assistance in the natural disasters that too often we suffer, ...

HISTORY OF OUR NGO

The Mentally Retarded Welfare Society was founded by the late Rev. Ignatius Kakumanu. Though it was started with a specific purpose of catering to the needs of the mentally retarded, but gradually MRWS have started undertaking all the other activities for the socio-economic development of the people in Andhra in general and the people in the districts of Guntur and Krishna.

At present, the MRWS's Director is: Fr. Addagatla Showraiah who is the priest of a small parish called K.C.Works (Krishna Cement Works), as there started a cement factory at this place in late 30s and it is 9 years that it is closed down. Ii is just 7.5 kms away from the city of Vijayawada towards Guntur. Prakasham barrage connects these 2 districts of Guntur and Krishna.

The parish spreads up the Krishna barrage this side of Guntur, working in about 100 villages with about 250 self help groups (SHGs)both districts. Besides the Home for Boys, which works at parish level, we have some economic generation programme of microcredits. We have too a health programme by name RCH (Reproductive Child Health Programme) in 9 villages of Chandarlapadu Mandal of Krishna District. There are 2 special schools called Balahitha for child labourers in Atchempet Mandal of Guntur Disrict.

OUR LANGUAGE: (Telugu)
In Andhra Pradesh, we speak Telugu, an ancient language used for about 55 of the 75 millions (2001) that inhabited our territory. Even though, there a lot of dialects in the region. Telugu sounds sweet and singing, and for that, it has deserved the name of "The Eastern Italian". This is just how we write the word "Telugu" in our own language.

Suddapalli Rajesh

The parents of Rajesh were Balaswamy and Sivamma. His father used to pull a rickshaw and his mother was an agricultural coolie. They have altogether 2 children, being Rajesh the elder one. The father was affected by cancer and died 8 years back. His mother Sivamma died while delivering the baby 6 months after the death of her husband. Thus the 2children have become orphans.

After the death of the parents of Rajesh, her grandmother took him to her home and the paternal aunt has taken his sister. 4 years back the grandmother was not in a position to take care of Rajesh and so much so Rajesh too ended up in his paternal aunt. 2 years back the grandmother took the sister of Rajesh to their home and they are sending her to school and she is studying 2nd class.

The paternal aunt has 6 daughters and though they attended school all of them dropped out before they reached 5th standard. The paternal aunt and her husband and also their 2 daughters, go to work in the fields as agricultural labourers. In the family, besides these members live the grandfather of Rajesh as well. They have a small petty-shop and one of the 3 members take care of the sales in this little business. They have 2 buffaloes that are taken care of mainly by the girls who are not married.
